Acidity (Amlapitta): Causes, Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment

Causes

  • Violation of proper diet and lifestyle discipline
  • Mental tension
  • Staying up late at night
  • A habit of eating excessively spicy, fried food and farsan (savoury snacks)
  • Stale food
  • Excessive use of allopathic medicines

Symptoms

  • Burning sensation in the stomach
  • Burning sensation in the chest
  • Headache
  • Frequent burning sensation in the throat
  • Sour, spicy belching
  • Vomiting
  • Sleeplessness
  • Headache that does not go away even with painkillers
  • Dizziness and darkness/blackout before the eyes
  • Inability to tolerate hunger

Generally, in this kind of trouble the temperament becomes irritable, and this trouble increases in the hot season and in the Sharad (post-monsoon/autumn) season. The headache tends to be severe, and relief is felt once vomiting or loose motions occur. This trouble also increases with weakness.

In this recurring acidity trouble, many people have a habit of taking medicines like Rentac, Omeprazole or Pantoprazole as casually as eating roasted gram and puffed rice — they should once study the correct method of taking these medicines and the long-term side effects they cause.

The painkiller tablet taken for a headache caused repeatedly by Pitta does give immediate relief, but it definitely adds to (aggravates) Pitta. Anyone who wishes to eradicate the disease from its root should stop this practice and take the support of the Ayurvedic system right away to become disease-free.

Apathya (Foods/Habits to Avoid)

  • Do not eat salty, sour or spicy food.
  • Stop curd/yogurt, excess salt, urad dal (black gram), tomatoes, sour mangoes, buttermilk, sour drinks, farsan, etc.
  • Do not take pickles, fermented items, bakery items and stale food.
  • Do not stay up late at night.
  • Eat regularly and on time.
  • Anxiety and anger aggravate this disease, so give them up.
  • Ice cream will give immediate relief, but it will fundamentally increase the disease.

Pathya (Foods to Take)

  • Especially take milk, ghee, amla, sugar/mishri, wheat, pumpkin, tandalja (amaranth greens), parwal (pointed gourd), black raisins, chikoo (sapodilla), bananas, etc.
  • Take Triphala, Brahmi, amla or sugar powder, or Harde (Haritaki) powder every night.
  • Gulkand and amla murabba (preserve) can be taken regularly.

Medicines

Among the following medicines, take as advised:

  • Avipattikar Churna
  • Sutshekhar Ras
  • Pathyadi Kwath
  • Kamdudha Ras
  • 2 grams of Shatavari Churna with sugared milk
  • Shatavari Ghrit
  • Chandrakala Ras

Panchakarma

In addition to the above, the following Panchakarma treatments are also very beneficial:

  • Virechan Karma (therapeutic purgation)
  • Shirodhara
  • Raktamokshan (bloodletting)

Yogasana and pranayama are necessary to prevent the disease from recurring once it has been cured.
