Sthaulya (Obesity): Ayurvedic Diet for Weight Loss

Diet

  • Take very little spicy, salty, or sour food.
  • Do not eat stale food.
  • Avoid refined-flour (maida) items — bread, biscuits, buns, and other bakery items.
  • Avoid pickles and fermented items such as khaman, dhokla, handvo, idli, dhosa and other fermented preparations.
  • Stop curd, buttermilk, lemon, tomatoes, tamarind, kokum and all other sour items.
  • Do not sleep during the daytime.
  • Stay away from outside snacks.
  • Since fat (Meda) belongs to the water element, drinking excessive or refrigerated water increases the water element in the body — drink water only as much as your thirst demands. In the morning on an empty stomach, only about one handful (Anjali) of water is beneficial for the body; drinking larger amounts weakens the digestive fire (Jatharagni).
  • Sleeping during the day and waking up late in the morning increases weight.
  • Exercise regularly every morning, until you sweat.
  • Stay away from oil, ghee, cheese, butter, and paneer. Avoid sweets, refrigerated items, and shrikhand.
  • Boiled moong is the most beneficial food. For breakfast, boiled moong, puffed rice (murmura), khakhra, roasted grains (dhani), and phulka roti can be taken.
  • Using honey: never take honey with lemon or hot water. Mix two teaspoons of pure honey in half a glass of plain earthen-pot water and keep it overnight to drink in the morning (or mix it in the morning and drink it at night).

Viruddha Ahara (Incompatible Food Combinations)

  • Viruddha Ahara (incompatible food combinations) is the cause of most diseases, so it should be avoided.
  • Milk taken with any fruits, curd, buttermilk, garlic, onion, radish, or jaggery, and along with anything sour, is considered Viruddha Ahara. Curd with jaggery or radish is also Viruddha Ahara.
  • Curd increases weight and causes blockages in all the body’s channels, so a person who is unwell should avoid consuming it.
What should be avoided in the diet for obesity (Sthaulya)?

Take less spicy, salty and sour food, and avoid stale food, refined-flour items, bread-biscuits, bakery items, pickles, fermented preparations (dhokla, idli, dhosa) and all sour items.
