Ayurveda is a complete science of “health protection” and “disease treatment”. It is not merely medicine given as powders, decoctions, or tablets — it is a complete system of treatment carried out through countless procedures such as Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal therapy), Shirodhara, and Raktamokshana (bloodletting).
Ayurveda describes two types of treatment approach:
(1) Shamana Chikitsa – Bringing a disease under control and eliminating it purely through medicine, restoring health to the body.
(2) Shodhana Chikitsa – Removing the various disease-causing doshas from the body through the different procedures of Panchakarma, freeing the body of disease.
Why is Panchakarma necessary?
Panchakarma treatment fulfils both of Ayurveda’s purposes, which is why the sages of Ayurveda placed special emphasis on it. It feels especially relevant today, and our humble effort here is to offer society a healthy life through Panchakarma treatment given in its classical, authentic form.
Panchakarma treatment is a system for purifying the body — that is, through its various procedures, the body can be made completely pure and disease-free.
Treating disease through Panchakarma
When we violate the dietary and lifestyle rules that Ayurveda describes — such as Dinacharya (daily routine) and Ritucharya (seasonal routine) — various doshas begin to arise in the body. As these increase, they eventually manifest as disease symptoms in the body. And when, despite this, improper or irregular treatment is given, or treatment is neglected altogether, and the disease goes out of control, Panchakarma can become the only recourse. In other words, in stubborn diseases where medicines stop working, Panchakarma reduces the strength/influence of the doshas in the body, turning an “asadhya” (incurable) state into a “sadhya” (curable) one. In this way, Panchakarma is like a sure-shot remedy for treating disease.
Panchakarma and health protection
For “health protection”, Ayurveda has described simple procedures that, with a little practice, can be done at home daily to prevent doshas from entering the body — such as Nasya, Abhyanga, Udwartana, Shirodhara, Shirobasti, Shirobhanga, Matra Basti, and Karnapuran — through which the body can be kept healthy.
Ritucharya (seasonal routine)
Fundamentally, according to our six seasons, the three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — naturally increase and decrease in the body. When the season changes, this resulting imbalance in the doshas should be brought back into balance through Panchakarma, to protect health.
Panchakarma means servicing the body
After buying a new car, we follow the manual’s instructions on when to change the oil and when to get it serviced — we make time for regular servicing without fail, and we stay alert about it, because (1) we’ve spent money on it, and (2) we enjoy comfort and convenience through it. We’re careful that the car doesn’t make noise, that mileage doesn’t drop, that pickup is smooth, and that there are no dents. But… are we as careful about our own body?
God has given us this body absolutely free, carefully fitted with original spare parts, tested and ready to use — yet if the car makes a single noise, we can’t bear it, but what about the body?
We insist on putting only good-quality petrol in the car, filled at the right time, and we take no risks with it — but what about the body?
Simply put, if we take proper care of the body this way, Panchakarma is exactly like servicing our car — it is the servicing of the body — because through Panchakarma, every organ and every single cell from head to toe is purified, the doshas within them are expelled, and every cell of the body receives renewed vitality.
As the body becomes pure, the digestive fire (Jatharagni) and the fire within every tissue (Dhatu Agni) come into balance, and all of the body’s functions become regulated.
Lifespan increases.
As all the sense organs and organs of action become clear and refined, we become more capable and efficient.
Through regular Panchakarma, a permanent “No Entry” sign effectively goes up against the entry of disease.
Rasayana Karma (Rejuvenation) and Kayakalpa (Body Immunization and Longevity) through Panchakarma
“Yat jara vyadhinashanam rasayanam” — that which removes old age and disease from the body is Rasayana Karma.
Panchakarma describes a “Kayakalpa” procedure to help regain a body as strong and capable as it was in youth. In ancient times, through this procedure, an elderly person would regain youthful vigour and become active again in works for the stability and development of society. Today, regaining actual youth may be a distant goal, but making a genuine effort to preserve what we still have is certainly possible.
Panchakarma and Vajikarana
The fundamental purpose of Vajikarana is to increase reproductive vigour and to enable the conception of the healthiest possible offspring through the best-quality reproductive elements, for the best possible children and the best marital relationship.
An introduction to the various procedures of Panchakarma
“Panchakarma” gets its name from the number of its five main procedures — Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Shirodhara, and Basti Karma — along with countless smaller supporting procedures.
Abhyanga is commonly known today by the word “massage”, but in practice, Abhyanga is quite different from what is generally understood as massage. In Ayurveda, Abhyanga performed using oils medicated with different herbs for different conditions is not simply a procedure done to relieve fatigue.
Types of Abhyanga:
Sarvanga Abhyanga – Abhyanga performed over every part of the entire body. This procedure is also performed before major procedures such as Vamana and Virechana.
Padabhyanga – Performed on the soles of the feet.
Shirobhyanga – Abhyanga performed on the head.
Usefulness: Useful for all kinds of joint pain, tissue depletion (general weakness of the body), for gaining weight, and for losing weight.
Swedana
Given either after Abhyanga or on its own, through medicated herbal steam, this expels various doshas from the body through sweat, while making the body feel light as a feather and providing immediate relief from pain.
Nasya
Nasya Karma means administering medicine as drops into the nose — “Naasa hi shiraso dwaram” (the nose is the gateway to the head). Nasya Karma is considered the best treatment for conditions above the neck, since the nose is the gateway to the head; it is a treatment method for all disorders of the mind, the nervous system, and the nerves, such as:
- Headache
- Aadhashishi (one-sided headache)
- Migraine
- Sinusitis
- Chronic cold
- Eye diseases
- Ear diseases – earache
- Nerve-related disorders such as paralysis, facial palsy, and tremor disorders (Parkinson’s)
- Disorders of the mouth
- Hair fall, premature greying
- Baldness, alopecia (Taal-Undari), etc.
- Epilepsy and other mental disorders
- Nerve and nervous-system disorders like paralysis, tremor, etc.
- Blood pressure
- Hair-related disorders
- Hair fall, baldness, alopecia, premature greying, etc.
Raktamokshana (Jalauka / Leech therapy)
A specialised treatment where leeches draw out impure blood, purifying the blood and clarifying the skin. This is highly beneficial for all skin diseases, especially eczema, ringworm, and psoriasis, as well as for conditions like blood pressure.
Akshitarpana – Tarpana performed with pure cow’s ghee medicated with herbs; it improves eyesight, reduces the need for corrective lenses, and is useful for various eye diseases.
Katibasti – Especially useful for lower back pain.
Prushtha Basti – Beneficial for spinal pain and spondylitis.
Hridbasti – Beneficial for various heart conditions; strengthens the heart.
Janubasti – Beneficial for knee pain.
Greevabasti – Especially useful for cervical spondylitis and frozen shoulder.
Complete Panchakarma
Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, Shirodhara, and Raktamokshana together constitute a complete Panchakarma treatment, through which the body receives a fresh lease of life. There are many stubborn diseases where, after undergoing this complete Panchakarma, the effect of medicines becomes much faster — such as skin diseases like psoriasis and vitiligo (white patches), chronic fever, and disorders caused entirely by Vata, joint disorders, digestive disorders such as Sangrani (chronic diarrhoea/malabsorption), diarrhoea, dysentery, and even difficult-to-treat conditions such as asthma, paralysis, and impotence.
Shirobasti – Useful for various disorders of the head and hair.
Lepan Karma – Application of various herbal pastes is effective for swelling and lumps anywhere on the body; especially beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
Uttar Basti – Treatment of various uterine disorders by introducing medicine into the uterus through the vaginal route, useful for:
- Female infertility
- Uterine disorders
- Blocked fallopian tubes
Beyond these, Panchakarma includes many more procedures and treatments, such as: Sarvanga Dhara, Taka Dhara, Padabhyanga, Matra Basti, Doosh-Pichu Dharan, Dhoom (medicated smoking therapy), Agnikarma, Kavala Dharan, Gandusha, Anjan, Lekhan, and Shira-Pichu.
