Diet & Care for Sprue, Diarrhoea, IBS and Chronic Dysentery (Ayurveda)

For stomach and intestinal disorders related to the bowels — such as diarrhoea (Atisar), Grahani/Sangrahani (Sprue/malabsorption), chronic dysentery (Marfo), IBS, Colitis, Sprue and similar conditions — the following precautions should be followed.

Diet:

  • Take very little spicy, salty, or sour food.
  • Do not eat stale food.
  • Do not take refined-flour (maida) items — bread, biscuits, pav (bread rolls) and other bakery products.
  • Do not take pickles, or fermented preparations such as khaman, dhokla, handvo, idli, dosa and similar items.
  • Take buttermilk (chaas) regularly.
  • Do not sleep during the daytime.

How to boil drinking water:

Take double the quantity of water you will need from morning to evening, and boil it with the vessel uncovered until it reduces to half. While boiling, add a small piece of dry ginger (sunth). Once it has reduced to half, let it cool and then use it. In the evening, boil again the quantity of water needed from evening to morning. Do not use stale (long-stored) boiled water.

Viruddha Ahar (incompatible food combinations):

  • Viruddha Ahar (incompatible food combinations) is a major cause of disease, so it should be avoided.
  • Any fruit taken with milk, curd, buttermilk, garlic, onion, radish, jaggery, and all sour items combined with milk are incompatible food combinations. Curd taken with jaggery or radish is also an incompatible combination.
  • Stay away from outside/restaurant snacks.
  • All medicines provided from our clinic are safe to take alongside any other medicine, so there is no need to stop them if you need to take some other treatment as well.
  • Take your medicines regularly, without missing even a single day.
  • Do not lie down immediately after eating — walk about a hundred steps, and if possible sit in Vajrasana for five minutes.
  • Practise pranayama and Surya Namaskar regularly every morning.
  • Apart from the medicine meant to be taken after meals, all other medicines can be taken at any time, even on an empty stomach, without causing any discomfort. All the medicines can be taken together, or one after another with short gaps.
  • Do not drink refrigerator-cold water or take refrigerated items.
  • Fruits such as pomegranate, apple, mosambi (sweet lime) and pineapple can be taken.
  • Eat small amounts whenever you feel hungry.
  • Keep to light food such as mamra (puffed rice), khakhra, and thin phulka rotis.

For a reliable outcome, you can also get treatment through an in-person or online consultation and order the quality medicines prepared at our clinic.

What should be avoided in the diet for Sangrahani, Atisar or chronic dysentery?

Spicy, salty and sour food, stale food, refined-flour items, bakery products, pickles and fermented dishes (dhokla, idli, dosa) should be avoided, while buttermilk should be taken regularly.

How should drinking water be boiled for these conditions?

Take double the required quantity of water and boil it uncovered, with a piece of dry ginger, until it reduces to half; let it cool before drinking, and never use stale boiled water.

What is the correct way to take the medicines?

Take the medicines regularly without missing even a single day; apart from the after-meal dose, the other medicines can be taken at any time, even on an empty stomach.

What lifestyle should be followed in this condition?

Avoid lying down immediately after eating, walk about a hundred steps, sit in Vajrasana for five minutes if possible, and practise pranayama and Surya Namaskar every morning.
