Ajirna (Indigestion)

In today’s times, Ajirna (indigestion) has become a very common health problem. Modern and urban lifestyles are the primary causes of indigestion. Physical labour has significantly reduced, while comfort and convenience have increased excessively. Due to irregular daily routines, improper meal timings, and unsuitable dietary habits, the digestive system fails to maintain its natural efficiency. In such conditions, the digestive fire (Agni) gradually becomes weak, resulting in indigestion.

When the digestive system is overburdened beyond its capacity, the body responds with indigestion. Since this condition develops slowly, a person may not notice it in the early stages, but over time it becomes severe and manifests as chronic dyspepsia. Ayurveda offers regular, systematic, and root-cause-based treatment for indigestion, through which one can recover completely from this condition.

Causes of Indigestion

• Excessive intake of water
• Eating at improper or irregular times
• Suppressing natural urges such as bowel movement, urination, or passing gas
• Irregular or inadequate sleep
• Eating too little or overeating
• Not eating meals on time
• Consuming raw, burnt, stale, or leftover food
• Not eating despite feeling hungry
• Eating even when not hungry

All these factors weaken the digestive fire (Agni), leading to Ajirna (indigestion).

Symptoms of Indigestion

• Abdominal pain
• Bloating
• Frequent belching
• Restlessness
• Mild fever
• Constipation
• Inability to pass gas

Types of Indigestion According to Ayurveda

Ayurveda describes four types of Ajirna, each requiring a different treatment approach:

• Amaja Ajirna
• Vidagdha Ajirna
• Vishtabdha Ajirna
• Rasashesha Ajirna

In all these types, weakened digestive fire (Mandagni) is the primary cause. Therefore, medicines that stimulate digestion are especially beneficial. Mild conditions can be managed with home remedies, but if the disorder is long-standing, chronic, or severe, treatment from an experienced Ayurvedic physician is essential. Expert-guided therapy is more effective in eliminating the disease from its root.

Useful Ayurvedic Medicines for Indigestion

• Hingashtak Churna
• Lavanbhaskar Churna
• Shankh Vati
• And several other classical Ayurvedic formulations

With proper selection and combination of medicines, complete relief from indigestion can be achieved.

Home Remedies for Indigestion

• Eat small pieces of ripe pineapple sprinkled with black pepper and rock salt.
• Cut a lemon in half, fill it with black salt, dry ginger powder, and a little asafoetida, lightly roast it, let it cool, and then suck the juice.
• Chew ginger slices mixed with black salt, black pepper, and lemon juice about 10 minutes before meals.
• Consume dry ginger with jaggery or dry ginger with sugar.
• Prepare a decoction of cloves and immature haritaki, add a little rock salt, and drink it.
• Drink a decoction of coriander seeds and dry ginger, especially if indigestion is accompanied by mild fever.

Panchakarma Therapy

When medicines are taken after body purification through Panchakarma, their effect becomes faster and deeper:

• Vamana Karma (therapeutic emesis)
• Virechana Karma (therapeutic purgation)
• Followed by Langhana (therapeutic fasting/light diet)

Pathya (Recommended Diet)

Light and easily digestible foods that stimulate digestive fire:

• Old green gram, red rice, tender radish, garlic, old bottle gourd, drumstick pods, pointed gourd, brinjal
• Amla (Indian gooseberry), orange, pomegranate, lemon
• Honey, butter, ghee, buttermilk, salt, curd
• Ginger, asafoetida, ajwain, fenugreek, coriander, betel leaves
• Boiled, slightly warm water
• Foods with bitter, pungent, and sour tastes

Apathya (Foods and Habits to Avoid)

• Do not suppress natural urges (bowel movement, urination, gas)
• Overeating or undereating
• Irregular meal timings
• Market snacks and junk food
• Stale food
• Incompatible food combinations (Viruddha Ahara)
• Colocasia leaves
• Staying awake late at night
