What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Ayuh”, meaning life, and “Veda”, meaning knowledge. Thus, Ayurveda translates to “the science of life.” This holistic system emphasizes harmony between the mind, body, and spirit to maintain optimal health and prevent disease.

Principles of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is based on the concept of the five elements: Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Ether (Akasha). These elements combine to form three biological energies or doshas:

  • Vata (Air & Ether) – Movement and communication

  • Pitta (Fire & Water) – Digestion and metabolism

  • Kapha (Water & Earth) – Structure and lubrication

Each individual has a unique balance of these doshas, known as their Prakriti, which determines their physical and mental constitution.

Goal of Ayurvedic Living

Ayurveda aims to:

  • Promote health and well-being

  • Prevent and manage diseases

  • Enhance longevity

  • Align individual living with nature’s rhythms

  • Jihva Pariksha (Tongue examination)

  • Mutra Pariksha (Urine test)

  • Mala Pariksha (Stool examination)

  • Sparsha Pariksha (Palpation and touch)

  • Darshana (Observation)

  • Prashna (Questioning about symptoms, habits, lifestyle)

Conclusion

Ayurveda is more than a system of medicine; it is a comprehensive guide to living in harmony with nature. Its time-tested principles continue to offer solutions for modern-day health challenges, blending prevention with personalised care.

Ayurveda is an invaluable science of life in this world, gifted by God Dhanavanatari for us. Our ancient and modern saints, Charak, Vagbhatt, Sushrut, Chakrapani, Bhel, Jatukarna, Harit, Agnivesh, Kashyap, Bhavprakash, and all the vaidyas of up to the 21st century, heartily nourished this science from their blood for mankind.

We must salute all of those who have thought about the health of humanity.

To understand Ayurveda scientifically, we must trust its principles until we can touch them with our vision.

Wishes all you healthy and long living through Ayurveda
