Share with:

Ajwain (Carom seeds) is a tiny kitchen ingredient with extraordinary healing power. Traditionally used in cooking, as a mouth freshener, and in home remedies, ajwain has been valued in Ayurveda for centuries. It is especially effective as a digestive aid, pain reliever, antimicrobial, and respiratory soother.

Headache / Cold Relief

Chewing ajwain or inhaling its crushed seeds wrapped in a small pouch provides quick relief from headaches caused by cold or sinus issues. Applying a warm paste with dry ginger also helps. Many pain balms contain ajwain extracts.

Relief in Children’s Cold

For infants and toddlers, tying a small pouch of ajwain around the neck helps ease Breathing as its essential oils act gently on the respiratory tract.

Hoarseness of Voice

Chewing ajwain provides relief when the throat is sore and the voice becomes hoarse Due to a cold or cough.

Toothache

A warm paste of ajwain applied on the cheek or mixing with asafoetida and applying directly to the tooth helps relieve pain. Inhaling ajwain smoke can also reduce dental infection.

Chest and Respiratory Pain

Chewing ajwain with salt or applying a warm paste on the chest helps reduce congestion, pressure, and pain. Ajwain is beneficial in certain heart conditions due to its antispasmodic properties.

Stomach Pain and Gas

Chewing ajwain with salt is a traditional and effective remedy for gas, colic, and bloating. For severe cases, a mixture of ajwain, asafoetida, and black salt with warm water is suggested.

Worm Infestation

Due to its bitter and pungent qualities, ajwain helps kill intestinal worms. A fine mixture of Ajwain with asafoetida and other herbs taken thrice daily is beneficial.

Joint Pain and Arthritis

Taking equal parts of fenugreek and ajwain daily reduces pain and inflammation in joints.

For chronic arthritis, long-term use of ajwain with dry ginger and guggul is recommended.

Urticaria (Skin Allergy – Itching)

According to the Ayurvedic text Chakradatta, ajwain with jaggery taken twice daily for seven

days is beneficial for urticaria. Adding turmeric enhances the effect.

Ajwain truly proves that even the tiniest seed can be a powerhouse of natural healing.
