In a quiet neighborhood of Ahmedabad lived Akanksha and Akhil. Ten years into their marriage, their relationship still looked as warm and settled from the outside as it had during their early years together. They had two children, busy careers, household responsibilities, and the usual rush of everyday life. Yet, somehow, they had always managed to preserve a small space for each other.
But for the past few months, Akhil had been carrying a thought he could not bring himself to share with anyone.
He had started wondering whether he was truly able to satisfy his wife.
At first, it was just a passing thought.
Then it became a doubt.
And slowly, the doubt turned into a fear—that one day Akanksha might become emotionally or physically drawn toward someone else.
Akanksha initially could not understand what was happening. Akhil still laughed with her and spoke to her as usual, but there was a strange worry in his eyes. Some nights, instead of sleeping, he would simply lie awake and stare at the ceiling.
“Is something wrong?” Akanksha would ask.
Akhil would smile and change the subject.
But some worries become larger when they remain unspoken.
One night, after they had shared a moment of intimacy, Akhil once again seemed unusually quiet. Akanksha thought perhaps he was simply tired. But inside Akhil’s mind, the same old question had returned.
Was Akanksha really happy?
Or was she only pretending to be satisfied so that he would not feel hurt?
After a long silence, Akhil finally asked softly, “Do you really feel satisfied?”
Akanksha remained quiet for a moment.
There was more than curiosity in that question.
There was fear.
She gently held his hand.
“Yes. But why do you keep asking me this?”
Akhil lowered his eyes.
He was afraid that once he said what was inside his mind, something between them might change forever.
“I feel that maybe I am not able to make you completely happy.”
Several emotions rose inside Akanksha at once. She felt sorry for him. But at the same time, being made to prove her own honesty and commitment hurt her deeply.
She realized that Akhil’s question was less about her and more about his own confidence.
The problem had not begun on that particular night.
For some time, Akhil had been comparing his understanding of female sexual satisfaction with things he had seen in films, social media and half-understood conversations.
He had gradually developed the belief that if a particular physical response was not visible, then perhaps the woman had not truly experienced satisfaction.
But human bodies and emotions do not follow one fixed pattern.
Every woman may experience and express intimacy differently. Some people express their feelings openly. Some become quiet. Some want to talk and remain close afterward, while others simply find comfort in an embrace.
A person’s inner experience cannot be accurately judged from one visible physical reaction alone.
Akanksha tried to explain this to Akhil.
“You should trust what I tell you, rather than trying to measure my feelings through one physical response.”
Akhil said nothing.
Her words stayed with him for a long time.
For the first time, he began to realize that he had been trying less to understand Akanksha and more to prove that his own fear was justified.
The doubt had also begun to affect their relationship.
Akhil repeatedly sought reassurance.
Akanksha repeatedly tried to explain.
Gradually, even moments of affection began to feel like a test.
For Akhil, every intimate moment had become another question:
“Am I enough?”
That constant self-questioning created even more pressure inside him.
One evening, Akanksha decided that they should not keep dealing with the issue only between themselves. She suggested speaking with a qualified professional experienced in sexology and relationship counselling.
They met a specialist and, for the first time, Akhil openly described what had been happening inside his mind.
During counselling, he learned that when intimacy is viewed only in terms of performance or success, performance-related anxiety can increase. Constant fear, stress and repeatedly judging oneself can interfere with the natural ease of intimacy.
Akanksha also understood something important.
Simply reassuring Akhil again and again would not be enough. Both of them needed to develop a more open and honest way of communicating about their feelings.
They decided to stop treating intimacy like a test.
Instead, they would allow it to remain a natural part of their relationship.
For some time, they focused on spending time together without rushing toward any particular “result.”
They talked.
Sometimes they simply hugged.
Sometimes they shared tea.
Sometimes, after the children went to sleep, they simply sat beside each other in silence.
Akhil also began paying attention to his sleep, work-related stress and the constant thoughts running through his mind.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, factors such as mental stress, irregular routine and inadequate sleep may influence a person’s overall mind-body balance. Therefore, rather than assuming that one approach suits everyone, it is more appropriate to consider an individual’s constitution, lifestyle, diet, sleep, stress and other relevant factors before deciding on an individualized approach.
For Akhil, this understanding was more valuable than simply looking for a medicine.
Gradually, he stopped interpreting every quiet response from Akanksha as a sign of dissatisfaction.
And Akanksha also began expressing her own feelings more naturally instead of keeping them inside.
A few weeks later, one evening, the two of them were sitting quietly together.
Akhil held Akanksha’s hand.
There was no panic in his voice this time.
“I understand now,” he said softly. “I was listening to my fear more than I was listening to you.”
Akanksha smiled gently.
There was no need for a long explanation.
In some relationships, trust does not return through words alone.
It returns through small moments in which two people feel safe enough to be honest.
Akhil finally understood that in a marriage, constantly searching for proof of one’s own ability can be less important than listening to the person beside you.
Akanksha, too, understood that sometimes a partner’s doubt may not come only from mistrust. It may also come from a deep fear hidden underneath.
Nothing in their life changed overnight.
But something important had changed between them.
They no longer ran away from difficult questions.
They talked.
And wherever communication remains alive, there can be space for trust to grow again.
Taking the Right Step by Letting Go of Hesitation
Akhil decided to speak openly with a qualified professional about his doubts and performance-related anxiety. Confidential and non-judgmental counselling helped him understand his fears and stress more clearly. In such situations, guidance should be based on the individual’s circumstances.
The Ayurvedic Approach to Care
From an Ayurvedic perspective, an appropriate approach should be individualized after considering factors such as constitution, doshic state, diet, sleep, stress, digestion and overall lifestyle. Where appropriate, classical Ayurvedic formulations may be considered under professional supervision. Self-medication should be avoided.
The Outcome
Gradually, Akhil’s confidence improved and communication between the couple became more natural. Their experience of intimacy also began moving away from the fear of “Am I enough?” and toward trust and emotional connection. Every couple may experience a different journey.
Special Advice and Consultation
A partner’s sexual satisfaction should not be judged on the basis of films, social media or incomplete information. If persistent doubts, performance-related anxiety or emotional distance are affecting a relationship, confidential guidance from a qualified sexologist or relationship professional may be helpful.

FAQs
Why can doubts develop in a marriage?
Low self-confidence, misinformation, comparison, fear and lack of communication can contribute to doubts within a relationship.
Does every woman express sexual satisfaction in the same way?
No. Sexual experiences and their outward expressions can vary significantly from person to person. One physical response alone cannot reliably determine someone’s internal experience.
How can performance anxiety affect a marriage?
Repeated thoughts such as “Am I enough?” can increase stress and make intimacy feel like a test rather than a natural part of a relationship.
What can couples do when such doubts arise?
Instead of blaming each other, couples can communicate openly, listen to each other’s feelings and consider professional guidance from a qualified sexologist or relationship professional when needed.
When can Ayurvedic consultation be considered?
If stress, sleep, lifestyle or other physical and psychological factors may be contributing to a concern, an individualized Ayurvedic assessment may help determine an appropriate lifestyle and treatment approach.
