My wedding is next month. I have heard many things about the first night from friends and the internet, and now I feel afraid. Some say that the first time a “nerve has to be broken” and there is a lot of pain and bleeding. Some say that if there is no bleeding, the girl is not a virgin.
I also feel that my vaginal opening is very small, and intercourse will not be possible at all. Are pain and bleeding compulsory the first time? What is the hymen? How can I reduce this fear, and how should I prepare for the first night?

Namaste. Such questions before marriage are natural, and getting correct information is the best step.
Direct answer: There is no “nerve to break” the first time. The hymen is a thin, flexible tissue, which in many women is already stretched or open. Bleeding the first time is not compulsory, and no bleeding is not a test of virginity. With enough preparation, patience and comfort, pain is usually mild or absent.
Correct understanding of the hymen
- The hymen is a thin tissue near the vaginal opening, which naturally has an open part.
- It can stretch with sports, cycling, dance or daily activity.
- Many women have no bleeding at all the first time; some have a few drops. Both are normal.
About the fear that “the opening is small”
The vagina is muscular and flexible, and during arousal it naturally relaxes and becomes moist. Often it is not a “small opening” but fear that tightens the muscles, and that causes pain. If the muscles tighten very strongly with every attempt and penetration is not possible, it is called vaginismus, which can be treated.
The Ayurvedic view
Fear and anxiety increase Vata, which brings tightness and dryness to the body. Both Ayurveda and the Kamasutra stress trust, patience and loving conversation in the first union. The Kamasutra says that in the first days there should be no hurry, and trust should be won slowly.
Psychological understanding
Do not make the first night an “exam”. Intercourse does not have to happen on the very first night. Many couples spend a few days only in conversation and closeness, and this strengthens trust.
Practical preparation
- Talk about this fear with your future husband before marriage itself.
- No hurry the first time; enough time, conversation and touch.
- A water-based lubricant can be used without hesitation.
- If there is pain, stop; both have the right to say “no”.
- If pregnancy is not wanted, discuss contraception with a doctor in advance.
Diet and lifestyle
- Even in the rush of the wedding, enough sleep and timely meals.
- Bhramari and Anulom-Vilom pranayama, meditation: to keep the mind calm.
- Light Abhyanga: calms Vata.
Pre-marital counselling
In pre-marital counselling both can sit together and get correct information. Many fears are removed in a single conversation.
Warning signs: when to see a doctor?
- Penetration not possible despite repeated attempts
- Very severe pain or heavy bleeding
- Fever, foul-smelling discharge or burning after intercourse
- Fear so great that it causes panic
Whom to consult: a gynaecologist, sexologist or pre-marital counsellor.
Example 1: A young woman in her twenties was very afraid of pain and bleeding on the first night. Before marriage both took counselling and got a correct understanding of the hymen. After marriage they took a few days without hurry, and intimacy began naturally.
Example 2: In another woman the muscles tightened strongly with every attempt. The gynaecological examination was normal. With gradual exercises for vaginismus, counselling and her husband’s support, she improved within a few months.
Related Questions
If there is no bleeding the first time, is the girl not a virgin?
No, this is a misconception. Many women have no bleeding at all the first time.
Is intercourse necessary on the first night?
No. Trust and comfort come first; intercourse only when both are ready.
What is vaginismus?
Involuntary strong tightening of the vaginal muscles, which makes penetration difficult; it can be treated.
In short: There is no “nerve to break” the first time. The hymen is a flexible tissue, and bleeding the first time is not compulsory. Without hurry, with conversation, enough preparation and a lubricant if needed, the first time is usually comfortable.
